Maybe I'm Doing Something Right

Life around here has been rough lately. For a myriad of reasons, I have not been the mother that I would like to be for the last two months or so. I've been feeling really guilty about it, but I've been unable to change anything. Savannah was assigned to give the talk in primary today, and being the slacker mom that I am, I ended up printing one off the internet last night. I gave it to her and asked her to practice reading it. This is what it said, (and I quick apology for my plagerism here, I can't remember what site I got it off of, and I did change a few minor things)

"Lehi and his family had to leave their home and go into the wilderness. One morning they found a special ball outside their tent door. It was a compass to direct them in their journey. They called it the Liahona. One pointer on the Liahona showed them the way to go, but it only worked when they had faith in God and obeyed His word. When they were lazy or unkind to each other, it stopped working, and they lost their way.

Alma tells us that the words of Christ—His teachings—are just like that compass. His words show us the straight course that will lead us to our Father in Heaven. We can read His words in the scriptures. We can hear His words in the messages of His living prophets. When we have faith and choose the right, we will hear the whisperings of the Holy Ghost and understand the words of Christ. We will know the right way to go and what to do."

So my sweet 6-year-old read it out loud for me (without missing a single word!) and then asked me if I would help her type something at the end. This is what she added,
"The words of Christ will only be heard if you are kind and if you are a friend to each other. If you aren’t you won’t hear what Christ is telling you to do. We have to pray to talk to God. We should pray when we eat lunch and breakfast and dinner and when we go to bed, if we don’t we won’t hear the whispering of Christ when we are asleep. "

I was amazed. I may not be a perfect mom, but if my 6-year-old can come up with that addition all on her own, then maybe I'm not doing as poorly as I thought.
