Last weekend Savannah's school held their annual Kindergarten/1st Grade Daddy Daughter Dance. The theme this year was Sock Hop. Savannah and I started looking at poodle skirts online like a month ago, and then in true Carley fashion I procrastinated actually buying one. The weekend before the dance (AKA the weekend that wouldn't end) I realized that it was too late to order one and I was going to be stuck making it. Crap!
So I took Savannah to Walmart, which I HATE but they are the only place around here that sells fabric. We found a pattern, but it was $12. I figured poodle skirts look pretty easy, so we skipped the pattern and decided to wing it. Also Walmart happened to carry a pre-done poodle which Savannah was thrilled about, so that saved me a step.
Being that I was practically on my death-bed that week, the making of the skirt kept getting procrastinated as well. Finally it was the day before the dance and I figured there was no more putting it off. It was Savannah's short day, but unfortunately not a short day for my job. I finally finished working at about 3 PM, and started looking online for instructions. I found a few, but they were all contradictory about how to do the measurements. And they all wanted me to use a zipper, which I refused to do. So I did a little of my own quick math, and figured it out on my own. All the instructions I found online said to cut 2 half circles and sew them together. Now, I'm not the smartest person ever, but it sounded much easier to me to just fold the fabric in half, and cut one half circle through the folder fabric to make the "doughnut" all one piece. Voila, it worked. Then we were stuck with the predicament of how to do the waist band. And at this point Savannah had fallen asleep. So I guessed on the measurements, cut a band of fabric, then wrapped it around her while sleeping. I was a few inches over in my estimation, so I trimmed it down, then sewed it to the middle of my doughnut, (I really wish I had pictures of all this) put some elastic in, and we had a skirt. Then came time for the poodle. I pulled it out, and what I thought was going to be a quick iron on was not. They actually wanted me to sew around the thing. I'm way too lazy for that, so out came the glue gun. Start to finish the skirt took me about an hour and a half, including research time. Its far from perfect, but really she wore it for 2 hours... who cares!

They had a great time at the dance. My pictures are horrible, but I think they got pictures taken at the dance.
