Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam

Today was Lincoln's first day of Sunbeams! He is no longer in the nursery at church, he is a big boy now. I've been dreading this day for months. He has only a handful of times in the last almost three years made it through an entire session of Nursery. Almost every week they have to bring him to Jesse or I, or he flat out refuses to go in the first place. In fact, for the last few months I've been going to nursery with him. I think I was pretty justified in being sceptical about sending him to nursery. I've talked to both ther Primary President and the nursery leader about the possibility of leaving him in the nursery for another year since he is a young three, and because of his issues. They both encouraged me to at least try him with Sunbeams.

I'm so glad that I did! When we were doing our usual laps around the church during Sacrament meeting today I stopped everytime and showed him his "big boy class" and the primary room. We talked about where he would sit, who would be in his class, and how exciting it is to be a big boy! When the time came he was excited to go. I went with him, and as soon as we were in the room I saw the nerves come out. I sat down with him, and he did great until the started singing. Lincoln hates singing, he always has. He stood up and left. So we went back to the hall, and he started screaming "No Sunbeam Boy!" We talked about being a big boy and I let him pick a dinosaur out of his backpack. We stood in the back of the room until singing time was over, then we went back and sat with his class. Within a few minutes he was calm and sitting on his own chair quietly holding his car. So I left. When I peeked in a few minutes later he was sitting with a member of the primary presidency, but still not throwing a fit. Then they went to class. I wasn't there, but I'm told that somehow he ditched his class and tried to go to nursery, but that the nursery teacher walked him to the Sunbeams classroom and he did just fine. When I peeked in there he was sitting in a chair! Sitting in a chair being quiet! Of course he was faced away from the class and the teacher and didn't appear to be paying attention, but he was quietly sitting for the lesson! I don't think he has ever even once done that in nusery! When class was over his teacher told me that he did great. He told his teacher thank you and see you next week and we left.

Success! Lets just hope that this continues and isn't just a fluke.
